Our biochar is sourced from recycled southern yellow pine feedstock because it has the correct porosity for soil amendment use. One cubic foot of our BioChar, used to create NAKED Char 5M, has over 690 acres of available surface area (pores), providing living accommodations for soil microbes and space to hold more water, oxygen, and nutrients. It creates a "nearly permanent" structure (over 600 years) that actively encourages healthy soil microbe populations. The liquid NAKED Char 5M evenly disperses throughout the soil and quickly reaches a higher percentage of the soil microbes.

NAKED Char 5M is made from softwood feedstock through “no oxygen” pyrolysis at an average temperature of 650 degrees Celsius (1202 degrees F). By utsing only single-sourced softwood pine, we ensure quality and consistency in our BioChar. We finish the production with a unique final step that activates and exposes the internal surface area of the fixed carbon. NAKED Char has low ash content, high porosity, and nearly neutral pH.

NAKED Char 5M is from our granular BioChar, with a minimum of 25% soil moisture. It is wet-milled to a 5-micron size (.0075 mm) and added to water. We maintain a minimum moisture content through the process to prevent BioChar from becoming hydrophobic. 

The microscopic size of NAKED Char 5M makes it easier to infiltrate the soil and more convenient for the microbes to inhabit.

The abundance of pores in NAKED Char 5M, when used by itself, make it an extremely effective remediator of contaminants such as salts, heavy metals, and toxins. With great porosity comes great responsibility. Due to its impressive ability to adsorb and hold nutrients, NAKED Char 5M should be blended (charged or activated)) to avoid temporary nutrient tie-up.

Our BioChar is offered in both granular NAKED Char and liquid NAKED Char 5M. Each can be used interchangeably, so your preferred method of application can determine which product you choose. We have some recommendations to consider when making your decision:

• Liquid NAKED Char 5M is used more often in fertigation, driplines, backpack sprayers, or in tank mixes with other inputs for lawns, landscape, gardens & agriculture. It’s great for compost teas and hydroponics too. NAKED Char 5M’s small size (5-micron), allows it to easily pass through all professional and agricultural screens – it won’t clog your filters.
• Granular NAKED Char is rough coffee ground sized. It creates more airspace by adding structure to the soil, especially in sand or clay. It is good for initial soil restoration. Applications can begin with the granular and later be maintained with the liquid. At higher rates, it is an aggressive remediator of contaminants such as salts, herbicide, petroleum, and heavy metals.

NOTE: The range of rates is dependent upon the size of the plant(s) & current soil conditions: good soils use less and poor soils need more. For agriculture/gardens if applied in furrow (right around plants) use lower rate or full broadcasted (entire field/garden) use higher rate. After a few years, rates can be reduced.

For Direct Applications: Mix concentrate with the appropriate amount of water per plant or area

• Row & Specialty Crop: 0.5 – 1 gallon per acre
• Lawn & Garden: 2 – 3 oz per 1,000 sq. ft.
• Landscape & Garden Plants: 0.5 - 2 oz per plant
• Trees: 0.15 – 0.3 oz. per inch circumference or 0.5 - 1 oz. per inch dbh (diameter)
• Remediation: double the suggested rate

For Tank Mixes: (compost teas, fertilizers & nutrient mixes):

• Blend 0.5 - 2 oz conc per gallon of diluted fertilizer or other mixes and apply at manufacturer's recommended rates

Suggestions:

• IMPORTANT: Prior to soil applications, “charge” your NAKED Char 5M with compost tea, fertilizers, liquid Humate, etc.
• Check out VITAL Blend 5M which is the NAKED Char 5M pre-charged with liquid humate
• Reduce nutrients/fertilizer by 15-30% and more for later applications
• Reduce your watering schedule or the volume of water used
• Application frequencies can be 1 - 4 times a year (multiple applications should use the smallest rate)
